![]() ![]() The other team members cannot touch the head, go in front of the head but can only communicate with the blindfolded person verbally. Give the head of the caterpillar a blindfold. ![]() To make it more difficult, I made the ‘head’ blind. They cannot change position until after the round is complete. One head, a throat, a stomach, a tail, etc. Then the new challenge awaited them.Įxactly the same as Caterpillar, however, this time, the 4 teams have to sort themselves into body parts of the Caterpillar. We engaged in a quick round of Capture the Gold and Caterpillar as a way to warm-up their reflection, respect, trust, communication and open-minded ‘skills’. ![]() If a team member touches the area outside of the hula-hoop, their ‘caterpillar’ shortens by 1 hula-hoop Using their hula-hoops they navigate around the playing area picking up their respective colored beanbags The teams are positioned in 4 corners of the playing area Similar format to the above challenges however, I dispersed 4 beanbags of 4 different colors around a playing area. We did one round of each of the challenge we learned so far and I introduced a new challenge called Caterpillar. Refer to the Core Planning Document for more information. This was a golden opportunity to refresh their memory on the Learner Profile and Attitudes we were focusing on – Open-Minded and Tolerance respectively. There were some conflicts that needed to be resolved within some teams. I then closed the lesson reviewing the key points of the Central Idea and how they played a role in the 2 challenges.Ĭonsidering my students struggled a little bit in the previous lesson we repeated the 2 challenges. They pick up 1 beanbag/gold and go back to their base, deposit it and go back to get another one The 4 teams have to use their hula-hoops to reach the gold. Similar format to Crossing the River, however the teams are positioned in 4 corners of a playing area with a Hula-Hoop full of respective colored beanbags in the middle of the area The second challenge I put the kids through was Capture the Gold: If they step out of the hula-hoops, that group loses one hula-hoop They need use the hula-hoops as stepping stones to reach the other side of the playing area I opened up with the challenge, Crossing the River: But of course, these terms all interact with one another, but I really did want to introduce them to the terms reflection and respect. Respect can be branched down to trust and communication. Reflection can be associated with further keywords such as open-mindedness. We focused on reflection and respect as the two key words of the unit. The Adventure Challenge unit is fantastic for developing teamwork. Reflect on their experiences in order to build a deeper understanding of self Share their own relevant ideas and feelings in an appropriate manner Reflection and respect are important for a team to be successful ![]()

![]() The subjective psychological benefits of music have also been linked to chemical changes observed via hormone levels. Potential mechanisms for effect are ascribed to the modulation of sympathetic nervous system activity and levels of the stress hormone cortisol. In some clinical populations listening to music has been suggested to reduce anxiety and the subjectively negative effects of physical pain. Music has many promising neurological and physiological effects that may be indicative of its effective use in the fight against sleep loss. Given the prevalence, cost, and potentially harmful side effects of pharmaceutical sleep aids, the search for low cost, non-pharmaceutical alternatives aid has become a priority. Pharmaceutical sleep aids have been linked to negative side effects that increase with long-term use, including nausea, dizziness, dependency and withdrawal, amnesia, seizures, and even an increase in mortality. In the United States, a survey suggested a 293% increase in the number of sleep related prescriptions from 5.3 to 20.8 million prescriptions from 1999 to 2010. Pharmacies within the UK dispensed more than 15.2 million prescriptions for sleep aids during 2010–2011 equating to around £50 million or nearly 1 in 10 adults taking some form of pharmaceutical intervention on a regular basis. Sales of pharmaceuticals have risen steadily, up 31% in the UK between 20. ![]() Īttempts to remedy poor sleep include the pervasive use of pharmaceutical sleep aids, which come with a list of negative side effects. If short term sleep loss is not remedied there is the risk that it may become chronic, a situation associated with serious health and wellbeing challenges. Work-related and driving accident rates are also thought to increase as a result of reduced cognitive speed and efficiency. ![]() Short-term memory may be impaired and participants report lower levels of happiness and more feelings of depression. Sleep loss has been linked to a range of physical and mental health issues, with short-term effects evident after a single night of poor sleep. Around 40% of United Kingdom adults suffer from disrupted sleep, a trend mirrored in the United States with approximately 50–70 million American adults reporting sleep difficulties. However, for many people in modern society, the chain is in danger of being broken as sleep problems become ever more prevalent. Thomas Dekker said, “Sleep is that golden chain that ties health and our bodies together”. Diversity was observed both in music choices, which reflected idiosyncratic preferences rather than any consistent musical structure, and in the reasons why music supports good sleep, which went far beyond simple physical/mental relaxation. In particular, the results highlight the varied pathways of effect between music and sleep. This survey provides new evidence into the relationship between music and sleep in a population that ranged widely in age, musicality, sleep habits and stress levels. Thematic analysis of the open text responses generated four themes that described why people believe music helps sleep: music offers unique properties that stimulate sleep (Provide), music is part of a normal sleep routine (Habit), music induces a physical or mental state conducive to sleep (State), and music blocks an internal or external stimulus that would otherwise disrupt sleep (Distract). Regression tree modelling revealed that younger people with higher musical engagement were significantly more likely to use music to aid sleep. Linear modelling found stress, age, and music use as significant predictors of sleep quality (PSQI) scores. They reported fourteen musical genres comprising 545 artists. ![]() In total, 62% of respondents stated that they used music to help them sleep. We investigated music as a sleep aid within the general public via a mixed methods data online survey (n = 651) that scored musicality, sleep habits, and open text responses on what music helps sleep and why. ![]() However, there is a lack of systematic data on how widely it is used, why people opt for music as a sleep aid, or what music works hence the underlying drivers to music-sleep effects remain unclear. Music can impact upon physical, psychological and emotional states, which may explain anecdotal reports of its success as an everyday sleep aid. Sleep loss is a widespread problem with serious physical and economic consequences. ![]() ![]() ![]() Of course, if you were interested in One Hand Clapping, you knew what the selling point was: voice controls. It’s not necessarily a deal-breaker, but it’s worth mentioning that the selling point isn’t excitement. ![]() Even in the occasional chase scenes that provide the rare boost of adrenaline, you’ll be ambling along at the normal pace you were without danger present. It wasn’t just in the fact that gameplay takes some time getting used to (there’s a lot of milling about as you slooooowly figure out the right notes to press buttons, move objects, etc.), but that character movement is relaxed at best and sluggish at worst. But should that mechanic be taken out, One Hand Clapping goes from a neat, quirky idea to an average and slow platformer. Worth repeating, the voice controls are nothing short of spectacular as a sucker for novelty in games, picking up this game based on concept alone was a no-brainer. With that being said, I couldn’t shrug off one aspect of One Hand Clapping, and that was… well, the platforming part. On paper, One Hand Clapping is nothing short of genius: a simple concept with a surprise novelty that entertains no matter how good the player is at singing. Even its music, which would normally be a pretty prominent and powerful force in music games, takes a backseat to allow the player’s voice to shine through, which was an extremely smart move on the developers’ part. One Hand Clapping does a lot of things right, from its beautifully crafted world that convey a variety of moods and emotions to its difficulty scaling that allows anyone to play even if they can’t carry a tune in a bucket with a lid on it. There are music games, there are rhythm games, and then there is One Hand Clapping - something altogether new. As the levels progress, the puzzles get increasingly more complex, with portions requiring players to hit specific keys at specific times, sing to the beat, and so on. At first it’s fairly simplistic, such as sustaining a note or singing a high note to force an elevator to go up or a low note to descend. You have a lil guy who needs to get from point A to point B in standard platforming fashion however, there are puzzles scattered throughout the levels that are voice-activated/controlled, making for some pretty unique gameplay. ![]() And while a microphone is required to play, a beautiful singing voice isn’t - in fact, sometimes the sillier you sound, the more entertaining it is.Īs a concept, One Hand Clapping is extremely cool. First created as a demo project back in 2018 by a handful of students at the University of Southern California, One Hand Clapping evolved from its humble roots to a full game available on pretty much any current platform you can think of. One Hand Clapping, developed by Bad Dream Games and published by HandyGames, may look really familiar to many popularized a few years ago by big names like Markiplier, JackSepticEye, and even PewDiePie, One Hand Clapping has an interesting development story. So it shouldn’t be all that surprising to see a simple concept like voice activation implemented in to the genre, right? Right - so why does One Hand Clapping feel like a completely revolutionary idea in the space when the technology has seemingly been there for years? Ah well, better late than never! Whether it be time manipulation, dimensional changes, or something else entirely, platformers are seemingly well-equipped to handle new mechanics to reinvigorate the 40+ year old game type. Every time you turn around, it seems like a new platformer introduces an interesting fresh spin on the heritage genre. ![]() ![]() ![]() There you have it, every crossword clue from the New York Times Crossword on August 16 2022.
